Carl Frampton Boxing News
By Scott Gilfoid: When some boxing fans take a look at the little 5’5” Carl Frampton (17-0, 12 KO’s), they see a guy who lacks the major power and skills to hang with the best fighters in the super bantamweight division like WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz and WBA/WBO champion Guillermo Rigondeaux. Indeed, it’s hard to look at any of Frampton’s fights and see him being able to compete with either of those talents, but former two division world champion Ricky Hatton believes that Frampton has world class skills of the highest type.
Hatton thinks that Frampton will prove that this Friday night when he faces 35-year-old Hugo Fidel Cazares (40-7-2, 27 KO’s) in a WBC 122lb eliminator bout at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom.

“If people are unsure about Carl Frampton being world class, they are going to see for sure that he is world class and by beating this guy Cazares, he will prove to everyone that he is worthy of a title shot with Leo Santa Cruz,” Hatton said to the Belfast Telegraph. “I saw him in his last fight with Jeremy Parodi and you could see maturity about his performance.”

Nah, a win for Frampton over the 35-year-old Cazares will just prove that Frampton can beat an older fighter who is fighting way out of his original weight class.

Hatton is crowing about Frampton’s win over a guy he shouldn’t have been fighting in the first place due to his limited ability. Parodi was some guy that Frampton’s team picked out for him to fight, He wasn’t anywhere near the same class as the top 20 fighters. Indeed, I didn’t even have Parodi ranked in the top 25, and I was wondering why Frampton was fighting this guy instead of the talents in the division like Fernando Montiel, Vic Darchinyan, Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. and Victor Terrazaz.

These are the good super bantamweight contenders. I don’t rate Parodi at all. And I don’t see Cazares, a fighter who is getting long in the tooth at 35, as being a top super bantamweight either. The World Boxing Council has a weird way of ranking guys that other sanctioning bodies don’t recognize as being top talents. I often see a lot of older guys ranked highly by the WBC for some reason. I’m not sure why they do it, but WBC always has at least 1 older timer ranked highly by their organization.

I honestly can’t see Frampton proving anything on Friday night if he beats Cazares. To me, it’ll just prove that the WBC has a ranking system that needs a major overhaul so that they can skim out the guys that really don’t deserve to be at the top. I think was a fine little fighter when he was fighting in the light flyweight and super flyweight divisions many years ago. But even in those divisions, Cazares wasn’t all that great, as he showed in his losses to Ivan Calderon and Tomonobu Shimizu. Those guys were able to out-box him, and we’re talking about losses that happened a long time ago. Cazares is definitely getting up there in age, and is fighting in a division that I don’t think he should be fighting at.

Frampton will prove he’s world class against Cazares, says Hatton
WBC Carl Frampton (17-0, 12 KO’s) will be fighting Hugo Cazares (40-7-2, 27 KO’s) in a WBC super bantamweight title final eliminator bout Odyssey Arena, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom.
Frampton, 27, says he expects this fight to be a war, although I have my doubts that it’ll play out this way. Frampton is one of those type of fighters who is good at overpowering weak punchers with less power than him, but when he faces guys with more punching power than him, like in his fights against Kiko Martinez and Raul Hirales, he gets on his bike and moves the entire time.

The winner of this fight will become the mandatory challenger to WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz. He’s one of those types of fighters who you can’t beat even if you run from him, so I’m still not sure what Frampton will be able to do if he gets a fight against him, and that’s a big ‘if’. Frampton still has to get past Cazares on Friday night, and that’s one of those fights where either guy can win. I mean, if Cazares, 35, was a little big younger, I’d pick him to win this fight for sure. But he’s getting up there in age now, and he might be told enough for Frampton to win the fight.

“It’s going to be a war, it has to be war. Frampton has to come and fight in front of his home fans – I’m ready for the war because every day in Mexico is a war,” said Cazarez via the Belfast Telegraph.

Cazares has been in the ring with the likes of Ivan Calderon, Tomonobu Shimizu, Rey Perez, and Julio Cesar Miranda. It’s kind of surprising that with Cazares having been around for a million years that he hasn’t been in with a lot of well-known opponents. It kind of tells you a little about the divisions he’s fought in.

Cazares was a punching terror when he fought at light flyweight and super flyweight, but he’s not the same puncher now that he’s fighting at super bantamweight. That’s way above his old weight classes.

Frampton recently beat Jeremy Parodi by a 6th round knockout lost October. Parodi had a badly inflated resume filled with little known opposition, many with dreadful records.

I see the Frampton-Cazares fight as a tossup if Frampton stands and fights him. Cazares has big power and excellent skills. I think can definitely beat Frampton in a one-on-one brawl. But if Frampton runs from Cazares in the same way he did in his wins over Martinez and Hirales, then I can see Frampton winning an ugly fight.

Still, it’ll be interesting to see how that fight goes. Frampton will likely put his track shoes on and run around the ring for 12 rounds like he did in his fight against Kiko Martinez. Initially, Frampton will try and trade with Santa Cruz to test whether he can stand up to his power, but as soon as he realizes that he can stay in the pocket against the talented Mexican, Frampton will be off to the faces for the next 11 rounds and hoping he can win a decision somehow.

Cazares, 5’4″, is a decent fighter with a good resume. However, he’s definitely not the fighter that he was earlier in his career when he was facing the likes of Ivan Calderon and losing to him over and over again. Cazares was a huge puncher when he fought at light flyweight many years ago, but at super bantamweight, he’s just an aging fighter who’s power didn’t carry up with him when he moved up in weight.

Cazares has won his last five fights since his 12 round decision loss to Tomonobu Shimizu in 2011. Cazares has since beaten Adan Garcia, Daniel Diaz, Rey Perez, Gabriel Altarejos and Julio Cesar Miranda. Those are decent fighters, and it shows that Cazares still has a little left in the tank despite his advanced age.

As for Frampton, he’s beaten Jeremy Parodi, Kiko Martinez, Steve Molitor and Raul Hirales in his last four fights. What we’ve learned from watching those fights is that Frampton isn’t a big puncher like some thought he was earlier in his career. Martinez and Hirales were clearly stronger than him. Frampton is more like a new version of Steve Molitor. In other words, a guy that moves a lot and tries to out-box his stronger opponents. Once Frampton faces Santa Cruz, he’ll be pretty much exposed and lose for the first time. I suspect it’ll be downhill for Frampton from that point on.

Cazares has the power to give Frampton a ton of problems if Frampton doesn’t run from him like he did against Kiko Martinez. If he tries to stand and trade with Cazares, then this could go really badly for Frampton.

LONDON (Jan. 30) – Irish sensation Carl Frampton is one step away from a mega-money showdown against Mexican superstar Leo Santa Cruz.

The undefeated super-bantamweight ace will first have to get past Hugo Cazares, live and exclusive on BoxNation, when the pair meet on April 4th in a showdown at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast.

The show, billed as ‘This is Belfast’, will see Frampton take on the former two-time world champion in front of what is expected to be yet another sold out arena, with BoxNation being the only place left to catch the rising star.

“Hugo Cazares is a former two-weight world champion from Mexico who brings a lot of experience and skill with him,” said Frampton. “I can’t wait to get back in front of the amazing Belfast crowd and secure my shot at the WBC world title.

“I have progressed so much in the last twelve months both in the boxing ring and out of it, and I believe that the next twelve months will bring me even more success and more importantly the world title.

“It’s fantastic to be boxing at home for the fourth consecutive time and to be fighting a former two-weight world champion in a final eliminator for the world title,” he said.

‘The Jackal’ is convinced he will overcome Cazares to set the mood ahead of a huge sporting weekend in Belfast.

“It’s going to be such a big weekend for Belfast sport, I’ll be boxing on the Friday night and the Ulster Rugby team will be playing in the Heineken Cup Quarter-Final at Ravenhill on the Saturday,” Frampton said.

“Hopefully I can set the tone with a big victory and it will be a successful weekend all-round for Belfast. The whole city will be buzzing,” he said.

The 35-year-old Cazares, though, is equally determined to reclaim his spot back at the top of the sport and is unfazed by having to fight in Frampton’s backyard.

“April the 4th is my chance to put myself back on the world stage. I am a former champion and I have fought all over the world so going to Belfast is no problem for me,” he said.

“Frampton is a very good fighter but no one can stand in my way on my journey back to a world title,” vowed Cazares.

Boxing veteran and manager of Frampton, Barry McGuigan, knows that this fight is not an easy one for his young protégé and he will need to be at his peak to overcome the hardened Mexican.

“In Hugo Cazares, Carl faces a very experienced man who has been there and done it. He has won world titles in two weight divisions, including winning his second away from home in Japan, so he is no stranger to partisan crowds,” warned McGuigan.

“Carl will have to be at his best to beat this man and I believe he will, convincingly, and in doing so Carl will become the mandatory challenger to the WBC world champion, Leo Santa Cruz,” he said.

The prospect of a superfight with Santa Cruz, should Frampton come through, represents a potential ‘Fight of the Year’ contender with two, come-forward, all-action fighters going at it.

Middleweight hopeful Conrad Cummings is also set to make his home debut in front of the Odyssey Arena crowd on an action packed undercard that will feature an array of title fights.

Frampton vs. Cazares, and many more great fights, can be seen live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch.437/Virgin Ch.546).
By Olly Campbell: It’s incredibly difficult for me not to feel just a little bit sorry for Belfast’s Super Bantamweight sensation, Carl “The Jackal” Frampton. After beating the vastly more experienced Spaniard Kiko Martinez in a European title fight almost a year ago, he then had to watch a mixture of fate and injustice conspire to allow Martinez to capture world honors just six months later, while he was left by the wayside.

The sight of Martinez crumpled on the floor in the 9th round of that Feb 2013 clash, has led Frampton manager and mentor, Barry McGuigan to assert that the Spanish fighter wants no part of a rematch with his IBF title on the line. In an interview with BoxNation, McGuigan went further, saying team Frampton had been strung along by Martinez despite offering considerably more money than he received for their first encounter.

It would seem that Frampton has become one of the most feared fighters in the super bantamweight division, racking up an impressive 17 fight win streak. Victories over the likes of Martinez and ex world champion Steve Molitor have only cemented his reputation as one of the finest young fighters out there.

On April 4th at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Frampton fights a homecoming bout against the wily veteran fighter Hugo Cazares. This fight has largely been bought about by the refusal of Martinez to sign for an IBF title fight and rematch. Team Frampton have thus decided to go down the WBC route, and this fight against Cazares is a final eliminater for the belt held by Mexico’s Leo Santa Cruz.

In his BoxNation segment, McGuigan stated his belief that Santa Cruz wants the fight, and that negotiations between Team Frampton and Golden Boy shall intensify should both fighters come through their next bouts. (Santa Cruz also fights a veteran next, fellow countryman Cristian Mijares on 8th March)

In my humble opinion a Frampton/Santa Cruz fight is perfectly winnable for Carl and a mouth watering prospect for true fans. The somewhat gangly Santa Cruz is ideal for a guy of Frampton’s stockier, smaller stature, in that he can use his superior speed and power to get inside the jab and go to work. It would be a case of trying to win the early rounds and go in for the kill in the last third. However, it would be extremely foolish to count out a fighter of Santa Criss quality. He is not the sort of fighter to let an undefeated record and a world title go easily. Especially as I imagine Frampton having to travel for this one. Santa Cruz has slick skills of his own as a former bantamweight champion, and despite his skinny arms carries deceptive power. Just over half his fights have been stopped early. Either way, later in the year, this writer sees this being one of THE fights of 2014.

For those of us who believe in Carl Frampton, there are a couple of other cracking fights the division has to offer him. These contests, due to Carl’s exciting style, also have the potential to be explosive.

For us Brits, the obvious one is a domestic clash against WBA (reg) champion, Bury’s Scott Quigg. The two have been on a collision course for much of their pro careers, and should Frampton beat Santa Cruz, an Autumn/winter unification between these two would be MASSIVE for British boxing. Again, its a perfectly winnable fight for Frampton, though Quigg has skills of his own and would obviously fancy the job. I’m sure fans of both have ideas of their own as to how this one would play out. My only thoughts are that as far as us, the fans are concerned, there can be NO losers.

This article would not be complete without me throwing out what I consider to be the toughest option for Frampton. Despite being the least experienced professionally, and with accusations of his fights being boring, one would be foolish to ignore WBA (super) and WBO champion Guillermo Rigondeaux from this discussion. Let’s face the facts, this guy is a master technician and with such vast amateur experience, he has glided into the professional game with consummate ease. Rigondeaux is a very special fighter in my opinion. Yet so is Carl Frampton. It would be an amazing unification bout if Carl captures the WBC this year. And let’s not forget, Rigondeaux has been traveling before when he destroyed Irish prospect Willie Casey, then undefeated, in Dublin a few years back. If Frampton could secure home advantage in Northern Ireland at the Odyssey, then I’m certain the roof would come off!

Fighting Rigondeaux would be a chess match for a technically skilled fighter like Frampton, and to a casual fan I’m sure, not the most exciting. I’d put money on it going the distance, because in my opinion these two ARE the elite of the division. For me personally, it would have the appeal of some of the real classics, but obviously wouldn’t be looked at that way. I’m thinking Roy Jones vs James Toney. The sort of 50/50 fight that sadly could never be as big because the smaller weights have never captured the attention of the bigger weight classes. Also, it doesn’t involve an American fighter!

I’m only playing of course, yet regardless how things play out, Frampton cannot look past his final eliminator on the 4th April. I hope real fans agree that Carl is something special with the talent to really go places and POSSIBLY clean out that division. Now wouldn’t that be something?

Thanks as always.
